Manuel Pellegrini expects his Manchester City players to fight to the end to try and claim a top-four finish in the Premier League. (The Citizens are 4/6 to secure a top-four finish)
A 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal on Sunday left the Citizens vulnerable for fourth place, with Champions League football not guaranteed for a team who reached the semi-finals of the competition this season.
Neighbours United are just two points behind City and have a game in hand to play against West Ham on Tuesday evening, leaving the Citizens nervously waiting to see whether they will still be in pole position going into the final day of the season.
Next Sunday sees United host Bournemouth, while City head to the Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea City.
Chilean Pellegrini admitted: “When things are not in your own hands you need to depend on other teams, but in football you never know, we will have our heads up and not give up until the last day.
“We need to wait for the Manchester United result, then we will think about our last game, which we need to win. When you don’t depend on yourself it’s more difficult.
“We have not finished the season. We deserve to be in the Champions League because we’ve had 37 games in the Champions League spots, so I hope in the last game we will not lose that spot.”
City have won only one of their last four league games, but could still finish as high as third in the table if both United and Arsenal slip up.
The Citizens are 4/6 to secure a top-four finish, with United 11/10 and Arsenal priced at 1/100.
