Sevilla came from behind against Liverpool to lift the Europa League trophy for the third successive season.
The Reds found themselves 1-0 up at half-time with a Daniel Sturridge wonder strike proving to be the difference between the two sides, but a second half collapse by the English outfit handed the trophy to the Spaniards.
Kevin Gameiro got on the end of Mariano Ferreira’s cross to level inside the first minute of the second half before Coke finished sublimely to put Sevilla 2-1 up in the 64th minute. He scored a controversial second – and Sevilla’s third – six minutes later to put the game beyond Jurgen Klopp’s men.
The 3-1 defeat means that Liverpool end the season empty handed, with this loss Klopp’s second in a major cup final since taking charge at Anfield. They lost to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final three months ago.
The result means that Sevilla have qualified for next season’s Champions League, a competition they are 50/1 to win. Meanwhile, Liverpool miss out on European competition altogether and may now struggle to secure signings over the summer which will help them push on.
Sturridge’s next assignment will be to meet up with the England squad ahead of Euro 2016. He is 50/1 to win the Golden Boot at the tournament while England are 17/2 to win the competition outright.
